Anthropologie, dresses, Holiday collection, vintage

It’s that time of year again – you know what I mean. You have a sudden fête to go to and you open up the closet doors only to discover that for the past few years you’ve been wearing your trusty LBD. Oh, that’s me actually!

Anthropologie has a new holiday collection that is too fabulous for words. My favourite is the Karinska Tulle Skirt. So feminine and flirty! The accessories are vintage and so chic. I love that they mixed metallics with colour, lace and pastels, satin and bling.

Vintage style and rustic interiors are catching my eye lately, so I thought I’d share the work of New York based photographer Seth Smoot. I love the unexpected objects in his photos and the stories they quietly tell. For a visual pick-me up visit his site.

Another favorite blog of mine is wunderschön gemacht. In English, it means beautifully made. Just look at this visual eye candy and cornucopia of colour. It’s like a tea party for grown ups! The table settings and craft ideas are endless. The flower arrangements are so effortless and pretty. Party inspiration galore!

Last week I didn’t post much because I decided to take a local vacation in my hometown Toronto – and surrounding areas.

First stop – a visit to my parents who live in scenic Bobcaygeon, Ontario

Next, we strolled through Kensington Market, enjoying the street art, vintage shops, lunch and great coffee. People watching in Kensington is such a unique experience.

The opposite of Kensington Market is Yorkville. Toronto’s most celebrated neighbourhood of style and culture, it has the most exquisite boutiques and restaurants.

We had to try Yogurty’s the new self-serve froyo place in T.O.
We filled up our cups with flavoured yogurt and added as many toppings as possible! Delicious!

Girl Crush

I have a girl crush on the life of dottie angel. Her real name is Tif Fussell and she lives in suburban Seattle. Tif is originally from Britain, is a wife and the mother of four kids “who talk back”. She wears a customized slip and dreams of living her alter-ego Dottie Angel’s life… in a run down cottage over looking the sea, with two airstream trailers in the yard, one works as her studio and the other stores her vast collection of vintage bits and bobs…

Tif, a.k.a. dottie angel, is a crafting genius. Her charming home, also known as “mossy shed”, is full of crocheted doilies, floral fabrics, pattern, paper lanterns, bunting and vintage vignettes. The epitome of granny chic.

A converted barn to call home

Garden, Going Home to Rost, handmade, home decor, Quilts, vintage

Welcome to Bonnie’s vine covered cottage in sunny California. It’s an old converted barn complete with a hay loft where her guests sleep!

I love her charming front door and the light filled living space!

The use of bright colour and pattern is consistent throughout the house. Knick knacks and vintage finds fill niches in all the right places. Handmade quilts and art make this house a home.

This backyard patio is just lovely. I could sit here for hours on end.

Visit Bonnie’s blog Going Home to Roost for
everything handmade and anything homegrown.

I’ve noticed that lately when I pin something on pinterest, it’s usually either feminine and pretty or the total opposite – dark and dramatic. Do you ever go back and look at some of your pins and notice anything about yourself through the images you choose?

All images can be found on my pinboards. Follow me!

Thrifty Style

Being thrifty can also be stylish! Ki Nassauer, edit and chief of Flea Market Style magazine, has made a career reinventing curbside castoffs and flea market finds into stylish and clever decorative items! Vintage suitcases as shelves… what a neat idea.

This magnet board was a former metal table top. Beth Schaleben, who shares the details about this project on her blog Show & Tell, popped a piece of weathered lumber into it, hammered in some railroad nails and voilà! A vintage magnet board!

And then there is Megan, author of the blog Brassy Apple. Check out these beautiful pillows. She made them from thrifted, old sweaters. For the DIY details click here.

Kitchen lighting

budget makeover, ceiling medallion, comments, decorating, DIY, ideas, kitchen, lighting, painting, solutions, vintage

For over a decade I have been perusing through and drooling over the glossy pages of home decorating magazines, hoping that someday I would have a place of my own to decorate. Well, that “someday” has not come yet so I am going to spruce up my rental apartment on a budget instead! I’ll blog about the progress, sources and my budget as the projects progress.

The first thing I’d like to ditch is the big round white globe lamp cover on the ceiling light in the kitchen (priorities, eh?). It looks like this one does at The Vintage Object.

This schoolhouse replacement glass shade replaced the globe. It’s not a huge change but I like this vintage style.

YAY – Shawson Lighting Schoolhouse Glass, White Finish, only $7.49 CAD at Home Depot! This is in my budget and I won’t have to touch the wiring!

I am going to try to add a ceiling medallion for a little bit of architectural interst and because, well I like fancy things.

I like this one, Hampton Bay 9 In. Medallion, Matt White Finish – $10.99 CAD at Home Depot. I’m going to double check my measurements and hopefully I’ll have time to pick these up on the weekend along with Benjamin Moore’s “Dove White” paint. I think I’m going to have to paint the ceiling so it won’t look drab against the newly painted white cupboards.

I’d love to see what some of you have done with your spaces, so feel free to contact me with ideas/solutions or photos!
