I just started following yet another Swedish blog called The House of Philia. It’s a blog written by a very stylish woman who has an interest in interior design, family and fashion.

I love the crisp, neutral palette of her home. White walls and lovely wood flooring set the stage for her stylishly classic furniture. Her home is an eclectic combination of mid-century modern chairs, industrial lamps, a stunning moroccan style coffee table in the living room and so much more! I think I also spotted two items from IKEA in the mix – the dresser in her entry way and the bed. Her home is so stylish and I have to wonder how she keeps those white sofas clean with 3 children!!

I love to read, don’t you? What better way to enjoy a good book than to create your own reading nook? Tucked away nicely in a corner of your home!

This is how I envision mine. I would start off buy purchasing the Petrie Chair. I love the modern, clean lines paired with a classic tufted back. This chair is so versatile – it matches almost any decor.

The Geobloom Rug (at the bottom), from CB2 packs a punch of bright colour. I feel as though this green is perfect for the summer months, but it is also neutral enough to go with autumn colours, Christmas decor, and right into spring!

Mixed metals are perfect for the accessories and shelf unit. The table lamp and bunny book ends add a touch of modern glam to this restful reading area.

Adding a rustic piece like this Carved Wood Side Table from West Elm lends an eclectic vibe to this tiny area without over powering it. Some colourful cushions and that fabulous paining by artist Lisa Congdon finish off this nook with stye and flair.

What do you think? Would you like to sit back with a glass of wine and read a great book in this space?

All that’s old is new again

The rage for mid-century modern might be drawing to an end. The theory behind this trend is that it was affordable for twenty and thirty-something hipsters with a ton of style and not too much cash. Inspired by shows like Mad Men, they turned en masse to flea markets and Craigslist where Eames Lounge Chair replicas were a dime a dozen. Of course supply and demand always takes it’s toll and prices increased.

I skipped this trend because I grew up in a mid-century house. I was surrounded by teak, polyester drapery and an orange lamp that my sisters and I tried to rid ourselves of numerous times. Our mother always hauled it right back into the house. She just loved that lamp!

I’ve been watching the granny chic trend since I posted about it in December. It might be on it’s way due to the fact that IKEA recently launched their new Emmie line of bedding and fabrics in large florals and toiles. Toile at IKEA? And pendant lamps too!
The company’s press materials trumpet “new textiles with old charm” and reference “an English garden at the end of the 19th century.” Very interesting indeed!

Whether you love IKEA or not, you must check out their LIVET HEMMA blog. Livet Hemma is Swedish and it translates to LIFE AT HOME. The blog LIVET HEMMA is written in Swedish, but you can google translate it into almost any language

I like to mix inexpensive IKEA items with my other modern and traditional furniture because I love the simple lines of some of their designs. Like the EXPEDIT book case. I own it in black/brown and I’m always changing up the accessories. Their pillows, vases, lighting and baskets are so affordable and they can be combined with any style of decor.

What I love about this blog is that it gives me ideas and inspiration on how to spruce up my own space on a budget! Why didn’t I think of using an IKEA mirror as a perfume display? Don’t know, but now it’s an idea that just might come to fruition!

Lovely and feminine. Modern glam!

Layering stand up mirrors – fashion forward!

Think outside the greenhouse. What a great idea for displaying teas.

Modern chic. Crisp whites.

Rustic and charming. Chocolat.

Modern, vintage and a bit of taxidermy.
Very eclectic and stylish! Would you guess IKEA?

Mixing modern, industrial and traditional with some quirky accessories for fun!
