I have a girl crush on the life of dottie angel. Her real name is Tif Fussell and she lives in suburban Seattle. Tif is originally from Britain, is a wife and the mother of four kids “who talk back”. She wears a customized slip and dreams of living her alter-ego Dottie Angel’s life… in a run down cottage over looking the sea, with two airstream trailers in the yard, one works as her studio and the other stores her vast collection of vintage bits and bobs…

Tif, a.k.a. dottie angel, is a crafting genius. Her charming home, also known as “mossy shed”, is full of crocheted doilies, floral fabrics, pattern, paper lanterns, bunting and vintage vignettes. The epitome of granny chic.

The rage for mid-century modern might be drawing to an end. The theory behind this trend is that it was affordable for twenty and thirty-something hipsters with a ton of style and not too much cash. Inspired by shows like Mad Men, they turned en masse to flea markets and Craigslist where Eames Lounge Chair replicas were a dime a dozen. Of course supply and demand always takes it’s toll and prices increased.

I skipped this trend because I grew up in a mid-century house. I was surrounded by teak, polyester drapery and an orange lamp that my sisters and I tried to rid ourselves of numerous times. Our mother always hauled it right back into the house. She just loved that lamp!

I’ve been watching the granny chic trend since I posted about it in December. It might be on it’s way due to the fact that IKEA recently launched their new Emmie line of bedding and fabrics in large florals and toiles. Toile at IKEA? And pendant lamps too!
The company’s press materials trumpet “new textiles with old charm” and reference “an English garden at the end of the 19th century.” Very interesting indeed!

Granny Chic. I first noticed it in Lafayette’s flamboyant abode on True Blood.

What is Granny Chic you ask? Emma Lamb, the admin for the Granny Chic Flickr group, provides a really fantastic description of granny chic design. She says: “It is about great design in new and vintage pieces… it is about beautiful vintage and retro inspired colour combinations… it is about mixing old and new ideas, patterns, colours and textures to create something that is both fresh and modern, yet traditional at the same time… it is about expressing your vintage passion from a modern day perspective… these principals can be applied to everything concerning design, crafts, fashion and interiors”.

Whatever your design aesthetic may be, I think you’ll agree that Granny Chic a trend that might be here to stay! Take a look for yourself on Flickr.

Here are a few of my holiday favourites!

This vintage DIY Christmas wrapping is so darling!

A white tree with vintage ornaments and a granny pillow on an Eames chair!
Is this moose ornament the cutest little guy, or what?

The father of a very dear friend of mine makes white stars
like these at Christmas. He is Grandpa chic and he doesn’t even know it!
Isn’t this shelf the most lovely display of vintage or what? Granny approves!
